How To Describe My Nation To My Guardian Angel | Abasifreke Dan

Together we sit and watch
our nation rolled into
a fat bunch of cigarette –
smoked off at its butts
by the same belching lips of
those that once promised us
beds of roses & streets tarred with golds.

It is only in a shattered country
that we sleep in pains and wake in death
with notes on grief plastered on our chest
and a millstone hung over our neck.

We are then like exiled seafarers –
journeying from a shattered countryside
to a black boat at the Elysian shore
that awaits to take our corpses in batches
to where the howling tempest comes no more.
